Fire damages HHS gym
A Hartselle man is being charged with arson and criminal mischief in connection with a fire that damaged portions of the old gymnasium at Hartselle High School.
Calvin Easterly of 162 Gum Springs Road is being held on $1,000 bond in the Hartselle City Jail.
The blaze did $28,000 worth of damage to the gymnasium.
Hartselle police and fire departments responded to a report at Hartselle High School around 4:30 a.m. Dec. 30. HPD later stopped Easterly in the parking lot of Morgan Plaza and he was taken in for further questioning.
According to HPD officials, Easterly said he was burning a pile of leaves and plastic next to roofing material near the gymnasium to try and keep warm. Easterly told police he stepped on the fire before he left and thought it was extinguished.
Woman charged in break-in
An alleged break-in on Barkley Bridge Road led to the arrest of a Danville woman.
Vonda Tucker, of 5780 County Road 84 in Danville, is in the Hartselle City Jail on $750 bond. She is charged with burglary in the third degree.
On Dec. 30, officers with the Hartselle Police Department responded to a call for a burglary in progress at a residence at 2250 Barkley Bridge Road. Earl Lee Price reported seeing a woman crawling out of a carport window at the residence. The woman was later identified as Tucker.
