In 1953 – 50 years ago-the Korean War was in its last agonizing year. Other events included,
April 10-Leaders of the UN command in Korea are meeting with their Communist northern counterparts in Panmunjom to discuss plans for exchanging sick and wounded prisoners.
April 11-Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Groover are currently enjoying a 10-day visit with their son, Billy Groover, a member of the U.S. Navy.
April 12-The Women's Society of Christian Service of the First Methodist Church has sent a box of food to Korea. Mrs. E. H. Phillips, head of the group's benevolence program, took the leadership in this initiative.
April 12-Marion Military Institute Cadets Charles Quinn and Robert Orr were home for Easter weekend to visit their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Quinn and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Orr.
April 13-Henry Meadows, a member of the U.S. Air Force, will be shipping out overseas in the near future. Before that happens he has had leave to visit his mother, Mrs. Maude Meadows, and a host of other relatives and friends here in Hartselle. Meadows' most recent assignment has been at Brookley Field in Mobile.
April 14-J. W. Brown and Buddy Ray Haynes of Falkville are now stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Previously they had been closer to home at Maxwell Field in Montgomery.
April 14-Sen. John J. Sparkman put a bill in the hopper today that would renew through June 30, 1953, the current VA program for direct loans to GIs. Sparkman told his Senate colleagues that this program was just about the only way by which VA loans could reach vets living in small towns and rural areas. Senator Sparkman is a native of Hartselle.
April 15-Bobby R. Prince is currently posted with the First Cavalry in Japan. Pvt. Prince is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Prince who reside on Hartselle 3.
April 16-Mrs. H. M. Betterton, Mrs. J. C. Johnson, Mrs. Charles Simpson, and Mrs. Edward Summers were delegates to an American Legion Auxiliary meeting in Decatur recently.
