Hartselle starts 2-1 at tournament; star pitcher suffers broken leg
DUNCANVILLE – The Hartselle American 11 and 12-year-olds started its state tournament with a loss but bounced back with two wins.
As of deadline Tuesday, Hartselle was still alive in the tournament, playing Rainsville for a chance to get to the state championship game.
Hartselle shot itself in the foot in its first game of the tournament. Against Saraland, Hartselle loaded the bases but could not get a run across.
It proved costly, as Saraland won the contest 2-1.
Thrust into the loser's bracket, Hartselle was in a must-win situation, and it did exactly that. However, star pitcher Chad Girodo suffered a broken leg in a play at the plate, and will be out of competition for the remainder of the summer.
After the 9-5 win to eliminate Oxford, Hartselle eliminated Shelby County with a 10-0 win Monday night.
See next week's edition of The Enquirer for results for tournament.
