Two early turnovers cost Danville 12-7 loss to Cold Springs
Jimmy George, Enquirer Correspondent
DANVILLE – A fumble and a bad snap on a punt.
Two mistakes cost the Danville Hawks (1-4, 0-3) their fourth consecutive loss, this one to Cold Springs 12-7.
Danville fumbled twice early, with one in the second quarter leading to a Cold Springs score.
The Eagles led 6-0 before a bad Danville snap on a punt gave them field position deep in Hawks territory. Nick Smith, who rushed for Cold Springs first touchdown, also ran in for its second touchdown.
Danville trailed 12-0 heading into the half but thanks to Jeremy Orr, the Hawks got back into the game. His 28-yard scamper in the third cut the lead to less than a touchdown. Orr also had a 73-yard run, but did not get into the endzone.
Danville had possession several times in the fourth quarter, but could not threaten Cold Springs lead.
Friday night, Danville travels to Double Springs to take on Winston County.
Priceville gets past Vina; Bulldogs now 3-1 on season
Joe Holmes, Enquirer Correspondent
TRINITY – Priceville's fans returned to their seats Friday night after forming the team's spirit line only to find the Bulldogs already down 7-0. As supporters were making their way back to the stands, Vina's Brian Humphries returned the opening kickoff 77 yards for the Red Devils' first score.
The Bulldogs fought to keep things close at the half, then blew the game open in the third quarter to post a 35-15 win.
Things continued to look bleak for the 'Dogs in the first quarter as the offense suffered two fumbles in the first three snaps from scrimmage. Quarterback Zac Fairbanks fell on the first fumble to retain possession, but Vina recovered the second loose ball to be back in business deep in PHS territory.
Five plays later, Priceville's "D" forced a miscue of their own, picking up a Vina fumble and killing the Red Devil drive near the goal line.
Priceville's offense fared better on its second drive, moving the ball to the Vina 24-yard-line behind the running of Fairbanks, Cody Allen and Hunter Teague. On fourth-and-two Priceville would suffer its third fumble of the evening, however Vina returned the favor on the ensuing play from scrimmage.
With first-and-goal from the seven, Teague punched the ball in and brought the 'Dogs within one. Brad Helton's PAT attempt hit the crossbar and fell just short leaving the score at 7-6 with 11:34 remaining in the second quarter.
Priceville would take the lead just before the half when John Miller's block set up a screen pass from Fairbanks to Teague for 35 yards, followed by a rope from Fairbanks to Jason Kilgro from 24 yards out. The two-point conversion put the Bulldogs up 14-7 with just 55 ticks left on the second-quarter clock.
The Bulldogs began putting the heat to the Devils in the second half, though.
On first-and-ten, Dustin Hamilton stripped the ball from the Vina tailback and raced 55 yards to the endzone. Helton's true PAT made it 21-7 with 7:19 left in the third.
Cody Allen's six-yard jaunt Helton's third PAT of the evening would extend the Bulldog lead to 28-7 at the 1:16 mark of the third.
Jeremy Holloway later scooped up a Vina fumble and zipped 25 yards for the final Priceville score of the evening and a 35-7 lead
Vina would post a final TD and two-point conversion late in the fourth to make the final 35-15.
PHS coach Marty Chambers said his 3-1 Bulldogs once again had to fight from behind.
"We showed a lot of composure there in the first half," he said. "We could have easily gotten down on ourselves and let the game get out of hand."
Chambers said the "home" atmosphere helped pull the 'Dogs out of the early 7-0 hole.
"It's great to have the fan support, the cheerleaders and the band," he said. "That gives us a true home field advantage and means a lot to the kids on the field."
While PHS does not have a stadium yet, local schools are allowing the team to borrow their fields for home games this season. Prior to Friday night's game, the Priceville band and cheerleaders led the stands in a pre-game pep rally as the team warmed up.
"That was just created a great atmosphere for the game," Chambers said.
Tonight, Priceville hosts Mt. Hope at West Morgan. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Falkville gives Vinemont first win of its season
Roy Jones, Enquirer Correspondent
FALKVILLE – For the Vinemont Eagles, Falkville was the best remedy.
Vinemont, winless up until last Friday night, defeated the Blue Devils 40-6, snapping FHS' two-game win streak.
Vinemont quickly jumped on Falkville for a 20-0 lead. Two turnovers crumpled the Blue Devils' confidence, and it showed throughout the remainder of the contest.
Blake Jump scored Falkville's only touchdown of the night – a two-yard plunge
For Vinemont, D.J. Methvin rushed for a touchdown and threw for another. Phillip Miller and Ron Winfrey both had two-yard touchdown runs, and Adam Palmer returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown.
One of the leading rushers in the county, Ian Thompson, was knocked out of the game in the first half. The initial report was a concussion.
According to the same informant, Thompson had three other concussions last season.
The good news about last Friday night's game is it does not count against the Blue Devils in the playoff race.
Vinemont, a Class 3A school, was a non-region opponent for Falkville, and if the playoffs started today, the Blue Devils would be in.
Friday night, Falkville travels to Colbert Heights and returns home the next week for showdown with Hatton.
It may be a must-win for Falkville Friday night against Colbert Heights, as after the Hatton game, the Blue Devils travel to Lexington and host Red Bay.
