Mayor's pay a move in the right direction

Hartselle's next mayor will earn $24,000, up from the current salary of $12,000. The mayor will also have health insurance coverage and have use of a city vehicle for business purposes.
The improved salary and benefits package is a step in the right direction.
As it currently is arranged, Hartselle's mayor is expected to work a full-time job with part-time pay.
Also, because of the lack of benefits, the pool of candidates able to seek the position is limited.
Hartselle has been fortunate in the past that most mayors have been retired and able to devote their full attention to the post. That may not always be the case, however.
Critics will say Hartselle doesn't have the money to pay for any increases. They have a point. However, if we're going to ask for more, we have to be willing to pay the costs.
