Funeral for Mary Gardiner Peck Turney Hardy, 83, of Decatur was Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 2:30 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mitchell Williams and John Clotfelter officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Hardy died Feb. 21, 2004, at the home of her daughter. She was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Morgan County to Albert and Pauline Peck. She was very active for many years in numerous organizations, clubs and volunteer services. She was instrumental in starting Hospice of the Valley and the Decatur-Morgan County Senior Center. She served on those boards and many others including the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Widowed Persons' Service, NARCOG, Newcomers' Club, Meals on Wheels, Mental Health Association, and the United Way. She received the Ira Lay Award (United Way), the first Ted Gilchrist Award, the Award of Merit (Alabama League of Savings Institutions), United Way Division Chair Awards, and membership in the Alabama Senior Hall of Fame. She was honored by other agencies for her service to the elderly and progress of Morgan County.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church for 65 years. She was a teacher, nursery supervisor, member of the Council on Ministries and Bible Club member. She retired in 1985 from First Federal Savings and Loan where she had been manager of 6th Avenue Branch, vice-president and public relations representative. She was the widow of Howell Turney and Newt Hardy.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynne Jones and husband Joe T.; two grandsons, Michael Gardiner Jones and Joe T. Jones III and wife, Dee Dee; great granddaughters, Emsley and Caroline Jones; and a sister, Eos Steele of Tuscaloosa.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley for the building fund of Central United Methodist Church.
