Only a week remains before the deadline to file 2003 income tax returns. Other kinds of taxes, fees, and fines are always in the news.
1944 -April 8, R. H. Parker has returned from Birmingham where he attended a state income tax meeting in regard to how the forms should be filled out.
2003 -April 9, Representative Ron Grantland of Hartselle will strongly oppose efforts to destroy the effectiveness of his proposed Clean Air Act. A fine of $50 is to be imposed when an individual smokes in a nonsmoking area. Making the air cleaner, not raising revenue, is the act's main goal.
1986 -April 10, In a little over two months Hartselle will ask the voters of Alabama to allow this city to continue the school taxes presently being collected by the board of education. Due to the bizarre nature of the Alabama Constitution it is necessary to get statewide approval before this can be done.
2003 -April 11, Property taxes produced $41.5 million in critically needed revenue in Morgan County in 2002. With the continued economic prosperity here, 2003 should show continuing growth in receipts without the necessity of higher millage rates.
1920 -April 12, State income tax returns are receivable until June 1, without penalty, according to a recent order issued by John S. Mooring, state income tax supervisor. Taxpayers should not expect any further extensions beyond this period of six additional weeks, however.
1910 – April 13, Since the establishment of pike roads in this section of the country, land values have almost doubled along the route of these macadam roads. The minority opposition that has existed toward the issuing of revenue bonds with which to get the money to build the roads is fast vanishing, and the people are beginning to realize what they mean in the way of economic advancement. In fact, it is quite a job to find any land for sale along the pikes that have already been built.
1971 -April 14, Hartselle will not establish a separate school system at this time. It is not practiable at present.
