Mrs. Wasson died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Sunshine Haven Assisted Living. She was born in Morgan County on Nov. 30, 1913 , to Claude McBride and Lena R. McBride. She was the wife of the late Phil Wasson and sister of the late Elizabeth McBride Barclift. She graduated from Riverside High School in Decatur and received her B.A. from Athens College where she majored in history. She married Phil Wasson in 1941. Grace's loves in life were Phil, horses, the American flag, sports, teaching, red cars, Cokes and chocolate.
When Mr. Wasson died in 1974, she continued to live in their Danville home until she came to Sunshine Haven. She taught at Morgan County High School from 1938 until the 1970s when she transferred to the new Junior High School. She taught history there until she retired in 1978.
Mrs. Wasson's teaching was unmatched. She required all her students to thoroughly know the history of Alabama including the state song, counties, county seats, state bird and governors. Her American history students were expected to know our presidents, states and capitols, preamble and amendments to the constitution, pledge and all verses to the Star Spangled Banner. She is known for firm expectations of her students to behave, study and show respect for others while always doing their best.
A great love of horses has been an important part of Mrs. Wasson's life. Until 2001, she had not missed a Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration since it began in 1939,
Mrs. Wasson was a lifelong member of AEA, NEA, Retired Teachers Association, Cattlemen's Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Garden Club and Methodist Church.
