BHS mourns loss of student

Brewer High School is mourning the loss of its second student this school year.
Joshua Jackson, 15, died May 15 in an Atlanta hospital from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle wreck March 30 near the school.
His father, Ed Jackson, 54, recovered from injuries sustained in the same accident. State Troopers reported Jackson's vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler at a traffic signal. Joshua and his father were both admitted to the neurological intensive care unit at Huntsville Hospital following the accident.
Jackson, a freshman, played basketball and ran track. He was driving with his father to school just after receiving his driver permit.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church in Valhermoso Springs with Royal Funeral Home of Huntsville directing.
Lindsey Saint, 14, also a freshman at Brewer High School, died Jan. 19 at Children's Hospital in Birmingham of cancer.
Both Jackson and Saint previously attended Cotaco School.
Principal Frances Couey said the basketball team gathered Monday morning to speak with youth ministers and counselors about the loss of their teammate and friend. A moment of silence was observed school-wide. Students were excused from classes Wednesday afternoon to attend funeral services.
"Losing two freshmen from Cotaco School has hit the Cotaco kids pretty hard," Couey explained. "Both were very good students. We've never lost two students from one class in the same year before, so you can tell it has really affected the students. They're a close bunch of kids."
