There will be no shortage of controversies for the next mayor and council to deal with.
1971 -July 29, The East Main street four-laning imbroglio is leading to friction on the city council.
1980 -July 29, Don Brown beat Paul Weinman 995-776 in today's mayoral run-off. John D. Long lost to Kenneth Thompson in the place three council run-off. Hulon Pounders is the only holdover from the old council.
1956 -July 30, Troy L. Nunn, presently a member of the Hartselle city council, qualified today as a candidate for mayor in the Sept. 17 election.
1917 -July 31, Robert Kent, son of Hartselle Mayor I. J. Kent, today volunteered for World War service today by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Hartselle's first family is very proud of their son.
1952 -July 31, John D. Long will be the projectionist at the new Ranch Drive-in Theatre.
1897 -Aug. 1, Hartselle's mayor and board of aldermen are being pressured by citizens to do something about the problem of night burglars. Despite the vigilant efforts of the night police to apprehend them, these miscreants have succeeded in robbing many of the town's most prominent places of business.
1965 -Aug. 1, Coy Stephenson died. He was superintendent of the Hartselle water works for many years (and the father of future Mayor Robert Stephenson).
1969 -Aug. 2, Site work will begin soon at the location of Phillips Industries. Former Mayor John Reynolds and current Mayor Ernest Maddox both did yeoman work in securing this industry for Hartselle.
2002 -Aug. 2, The Hartselle board of education is being criticized in the state press for convening during the Alabama Association of School Boards' convention at Gulf Shores. The allegation is that it was "an illegal secret meeting."
1890 -Aug. 4, The city dads, together with the railroad officials, are erecting a nice water fountain in the railroad park at this place. When completed it will be an ornament to the town and a credit to the railroad.
