Coaching changes will dominate the agenda at the monthly Morgan County School Board meeting on Aug. 12. Two area schools, Falkville and Priceville, have submitted recommendations of new coaches for the 2004-05 school year, pending the board's approval.
Tonya Sparkman is the new coach of softball and junior varsity volleyball at Falkville.
Sparkman was the head softball coach at Danville last season and led the Lady Hawks to the state tournament. That was after serving one season as an assistant for the Lady Hawks' softball program.
Sparkman, who graduated from Falkville in 1995, says she is happy to be a Blue Devil again.
"This is kinda a homecoming for me," Sparkman said. "I always wanted to come back.
Some of my old teachers are still there and I have a lot of friends there. I'm very excited to be back in Falkville."
Sparkman will teach physical education beginning Aug. 12.
Kent Tucker, who resigned his position as head coach of the girls basketball program, will assist Sparkman on the softball field.
Tucker led the Lady Blue Devils to the 1987 Class 2A state softball title.
Meanwhile, the Blue Devils named a replacement for Tucker as girl's basketball coach. Baseball coach Jeff Andrews will begin his first season as coach of the girl's varsity this October.
Andrews was previously a junior varsity head basketball coach.
Andrews who coached basketball at Union Hill Middle School in Somerville from 2001-04 before transferring to Falkville Elementary School last December.
Andrews will also replace Amy Keel as varsity volleyball coach.
Andrews will be coaching three sports at Falkville.
He led the Blue Devil baseball team to the second round of the state playoffs in May.
"It's going to be a challenge to coach three sports," Andrews said. "I'll need a lot of help from my assistants and from my players. "
At Priceville, Maranda Farmer resigned as volleyball coach Aug. 5. Farmer will remain with the school as an instructor.
Two days later, Principal Mike Green brought in Sonya Kennedy to coach the Lady Bulldogs.
