As Mayor-elect Dwight Tankersley prepares to take office here are more illustrations of the wide variety of roles that have been performed by Hartselle's city leader over the years.
1944 -September 9, Mayor W. T. Stewart is urging citizens to continue to pray for all the brave men fighting for democracy in Europe and Asia. Last spring on D-Day business houses closed for an hour so that employees could go to one of the churches to pray for the men of the invasion forces.
1950 -September 10, Mayor John O. Burleson does not shun the menial chores connected with the city business, even pitching in on the city garbage disposal detail when occasion demands. He is also very well acquainted with the operation of the city grader.
1926 -September 11, Mayor S. E. "Happy" Gibson is working with Birmingham industries to get the rest of the material needed to complete construction of the new water plant. Delivery of a 50,000-gallon tank is expected within 30 days.
1930 -September 12, At the invitation of Hartselle's strongly Democratic Mayor J. L. Day, U.S. Representative Lister Hill of Montgomery will come here next week to speak in behalf of the complete party ticket.
1988 -September 13, Today's mayoral election was won by Scotty Maples, now Morgan County parks and recreation director. He will be well equipped to help develop municipal programs in this area as well as others.
1965 -September 14, Mayor John Reynolds has been working closely with Governor George Wallace and his administration to ensure that Hartselle's greatly improved airport is an integral part of the state system. The facility is to be named for Asa Rountree, Jr., aeronautics director and son of the Enquirer founding editor.
1936 -September 15, Mayor J. P. Hodges is doing all he can to aid the housing industry by encouraging the accelerated construction of new homes in Hartselle. He estimates that at least 25 new residences have been built within the last few months and many more are being planned. Included among these new homes is one built for Mayor Hodges and his family.
