Walk for Diabetes scheduled

Exercise and health education are part of many activities the Hartselle Chapter of the American Diabetic Association has planned for its second America's Walk for Diabetes, Hartselle Diabetic Walk-A-Thon.
The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., with registration at 10 a.m. at Sparkman Park Pavilion 4, and a walk warm-up at 10:15 a.m.
Walkers will make the 7/10 of 1-mile loop around the park once to raise pledge funds to benefit the American Diabetes Association for diabetes research, education, local programs and services.
"Our goal is to raise a little money and a lot of awareness about diabetes," Hartselle Chapter of the American Diabetic Association sponsor and Hartselle Medical Center registered nurse Marcie Bullard said. "We encourage everyone to bring their families and walk for this great cause."
Participants and supporters are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the afternoon's activities, including a silent auction, dunking booth, exhibits, refreshments, line dancing, pony rides, petting zoo, moon walk, funnel cakes, fried dill pickles, square dancing and a prize drawing every 15 minutes.
A grand prize drawing will be held at 1 p.m. for the choice of a quilt, $100 Wiley's Sporting Goods gift certificate, or a $100 Wal-Mart gift certificate.
Tickets can be purchased until time for the drawing or bought in advance from members of the Hartselle Chapter of the American Diabetic Association.
Walk-A-Thon registration is free, but those who make a $25 pledge will receive a T-shirt and meal ticket. Pre-registration can be mailed to Hartselle Diabetic Walk-A-Thon, P.O. Box 702, Hartselle, 35640, or dropped at the information desk of Hartselle Medical Center, attention Kathy Goodwin.
Businesses can have their name added to the event T-shirt for a $25 sponsorship fee. Participants will also have the opportunity to subscribe to or renew subscriptions to "Southern Living" magazine for $19.95 with $4 of the cost donated to the Hartselle Diabetic Walk-A-Thon.

The Hartselle Chapter of the American Diabetic Association meets on the second Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Pleasant Place building. Everyone with diabetes, or those who have family and friends with diabetes, is encouraged to attend.
