Funeral for Joe Summerford, 69, of Falkville, was Friday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. at McKendree United Methodist Church with Dr. David Parker, Rev. Virgil Bohn, Rev. Grad Tanner and Judge David Breland officiating.
Burial was in Falkville City Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Summerford died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Cullman Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was born Oct. 30, 1934, in Somerville to Robert and Alice Oden Summerford. He grew up in Falkville and graduated from Falkville High School and attended Florence State College. He served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He served on the Falkville Town Council for several years, operated a general merchandise business in Falkville for 10 years, and worked in maintenance at Summerford Nursing Home for eight years. He helped to organize the first Falkville Volunteer Fire Department and was a lifetime cattle farmer. He served for 16 years on the Morgan County Commission representing District 3. Mr. Summerford was an active member of McKendree United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Rhona Howell Summerford of Falkville; three sons, Robert Eric Summerford and wife Lisa, Charles Thomas "Tom" Summerford and wife Tina and Frank Daniel "Hank" Summerford and wife Marsha; six grandchildren, Chad, Trey, Laura, Anna, Robert and Phillip Summerford; one brother, Robert O. "Bobby" Summerford; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were his sons, Eric, Tom and Hank Summerford; his grandsons, Chad, Trey, Robert and Phillip Summerford; his nephews, Robert and John Summerford, Pat Howell and Mark Chatham; and his great nephews, Alan, Ross, Ryan and John Thomas Summerford.
Honorary pallbearers were Howard Jenkins, Joel Gurley, Johnny Shelton, Milford Fields, Mike Tarpley, William "Junior" Waddell, Bobby Moore, Dona Burgreen, Gary Murphy, Ray Sanders, Lindall Stinson, Rufus Penn, Bill Lewis, Russell Reeder, Derrill Tomblin, Don Lawrence, Roy Watts, Gene Durand, Larry Bennich, Dr. George Lyrene, Dr. Chris LaGanke, Dr. Johnny Nacilla and Dr. Mir Quon Varquez.
