City adds land to its borders

The city of Hartselle recently grew by some 45 acres.
Hartselle's City Council unanimously approved two annexations, one for 40 acres of land and another for 4.67 acres.
The 40 acres of land sits on Peach Orchard Road, off Highway 31. The land will be used for single-family homes and touches the city limits on two sides.
Planning Commission OK'd the annexation on a 5-0 vote with 1 abstension and the council approved it unanimously.
The 4.67 acres is currently vacant and sits on the corner of Peach Orchard Road and Moss Street. The applicant wants to use the land for single family residential use. The planning commission approved the annexation unanimously, as did the city council.
The council also approved rezoning some 2.67 acres at the corner of Main Street West and Lndsey Lane. The council voted unanimously to rezone the land from single family residential to neighborhood shopping zone.
The property is bordered on one side by a business zone and on the other by a residential zone. Fire Station No. 2 borders the property to the west. The neighborhood shopping zone is more limited than a typical retail zoning and will restrict the type of commercial businesses that can operate in the area.
Council members said any development on the land would be subject to site plan review, which would include drainage and access studies. The planning commission approved the rezoning 4-0 with one abstension.
