The old Pineview Hospital on Hwy. 31, North is coming down to make room for what its owner hopes will be a substantial new business development for Hartselle.
Wilson Dinsmore of Birmingham said he has contracted with Asbestos Abatement and Demotion Co. of Cullman to clean out the buildings and remove the asbestos.
A spokesman for the contractor said the work of cleaning out the main building started last week and will continue for several days.
He added that removal of building materials containing asbestos will be done under the auspices of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and will take about six weeks.
The 10-acre former hospital site has been long viewed by city officials as an ideal location for new business development.
It has substantial highway frontage and lies adjacent to the Wal-Mart super center property.
Dinsmore said he doesn't have a buyer for the property but envisions it being under development within the next 18 months.
