Harvey Clifton McClanahan

A graveside service for Harvey Clifton McClanahan of Austin, Texas, formerly of Houston, Texas and Birmingham, was Friday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at Hartselle City Cemetery with Pastor Pete McKenzie officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. McClanahan died Tuesday, March 22, 2005. He was born on May 15, 1919, in Hartselle. He graduated from Morgan County High School and enrolled at Auburn University as a co-op (with U.S. Steel) and Army ROTC student at Auburn University. He completed his electrical engineering degree at Auburn in 1942, and was sent into combat in the Philippines during World War II. For meritorious service, he was decorated with the Bronze Star and obtained the rank of Captain. He was in the Reserves for 25 years and retired from the U.S. Army as a Lt. Col.
Following the war, Mr. McClanahan worked for Tennessee Coal &Iron (that later became U.S. Steel) in Birmingham. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1970, and was employed by Brown &Root in Paris, Texas, for two years, and then Houston, Texas, where he was chief electrical estimator (domestic and abroad) until he retired in 1984. He was preceded in death by Hazel Payne McClanahan and his daughter, Molly McClanahan Barton.
Mr. McClanahan was an active member of the Episcopal Church, an avid hunter and fisherman, and traveler. Beginning in 1963, he visited each of the 50 states, taking his family of seven on camping excursions through 37 states, and traveled through Mexico, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, France, Rome and Spain.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy McClanahan of Austin, Texas; two sons, Thomas E. McClanahan and wife Lisa of Austin, Texas and Michael McClanahan and wife Julie of Auburn; two daughters, Jenny Collins and husband Eddie, of Richland, Wash. and Suzan McKenzie and husband Pete of Irvine, Caif.; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
