Countywide cleanup planned

A spring cleanup in Hartselle and Morgan County is scheduled April 18-23 in an effort to remove litter and trash from roadsides and to give families a convenient means to dispose of the unneeded and unwanted items they have collected over the winter months.
"Our adopt-a-mile volunteers continue to work hard to keep litter picked up on the road rights-of-way and their efforts are greatly appreciated," said Ricky Brooks, director of Morgan County Environmental Services. "However, their number has declined and we need everybody to pitch in and help."
Carolyn Wallace, Hartselle Beautification Association director, said volunteers are encouraged to assemble at E.A.R.T.H. Park at 7 a.m. on April 23 to pick up litter on city street rights-of-way. They are expected to stay on the job until about 11 a.m.
She said some city streets are kept neat and clean through the continuing efforts of volunteers while others go lacking.
"We have some rights-of-way that have became badly littered and we'll be focusing on them during the cleanup," she said. "We desperately need help from first time volunteers or others not already committed to keeping a particular area litter free."
Trash bags and protective gloves are furnished. They may be picked up on cleanup day or earlier, if desired, by contacting Wallace at the HBA office, 773-0300 or at home, 773-1468.
In addition to volunteering for litter pickup, Hartselle residents are encouraged to engage in general cleanup activities during spring cleanup week. Unwanted items such as worn out appliances and furniture may be placed at curbside for pickup by the city's trash truck operators. The public works department will have equipment and personnel working as early as 6 a.m. on Saturday. The city's landfill is open for disposal of trash by residents free of change during normal operating hours. It will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on cleanup day.
Large roll-off dumpsters will be available at the four district shops to accept trash from families doing spring cleaning. Acceptable are discarded appliances and home furnishings. Districts 2,3, and 4 will accept items from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Due to limited space, District 1 will accept items only from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
The Decatur-Morgan County Landfill at Trinity also will accept household trash and rubbish for disposal throughout the cleanup period. Exceptions are shingles, tires, household garbage, lumber and hazardous chemicals. Proof of residency is required. The landfill is open from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.
