Lady Tiger golfers win sectional

The Hartselle Lady Tiger golf team has qualified for the state tournament for the first time in the program's history. Hartselle won the Central Sectional at Canebrake County Club in Athens April 28. Taylor Kirby led the Lady Tigers with a 91, followed by Patricia Long with a 96, Mary Agnew with a 97 and Megan Gillott at 106.
Hartselle coach Keith Morrow feels his team's depth was the key to winning the sectional title.
"We've got four girls who can shoot in the 90s and Taylor Kirby can shoot in the 80s," Morrow said. "Most teams have one good golfer and then their others may shoot over 100 each. It gives us an advantage."
Cullman finished second and also qualified for state. Priceville and Falkville missed out on the state tournament when they finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
The state tournament is in Opelika, May 9-10. Due to the number of schools fielding teams, there are not different class champions in girls' golf. Schools from 1A through 6A compete together, which is a disadvantage to Hartselle, according to Morrow.
"We've beaten every 5A school we've played this season," Morrow said. "If we played a 5A tournament at the state level, I'm confident we'd win it. But with all the 6A schools in there it's hard to say what will happen."
All team members including alternates will attend the state tournament next week. The other Lady Tiger golfers are Meagan Boudreaux, Laura Teichmiller and Stephanie Sivley.
