Bids sought for Garner Road project

The widening and resurfacing of Garner Road is the subject of a notice for bids published in this edition of the Hartselle Enquirer.
Mayor Dwight Tankersley said the City Council has agreed to budget $100,784 in fiscal 2005-06 to pay for the work.
Bids will be accepted on the proposed project until 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, with a pre-bid conference scheduled Thursday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. in the City Hall Auditorium, according to Jeff Johnson, director of the Department of Development.
Johnson said bid specifications call for the existing roadway, from Groover Road to Lake South Subdivision, to be widened from 18-19 feet to 22 feet. Some drainage and shoulder improvement work is included.
"When the shoulder and pipe work is completed, asphalt leveling material will be used to fill in ruts and potholes and a 1 1/2 inch asphalt surface will be put down," Johnson stated.
He added that 45 days will be allowed for completion of the project and that the roadway will remain in use while the work is in progress. No additional right-of-way will be required.
Traffic on the road has increased dramatically in recent years due to the steady growth of single-family residential housing in the area. Two proposed new subdivisions, with 90 building lots, are currently in the planning stage.
The Garner Road project will not affect the amount of gas tax money available for improvements to other streets in 2005, Tankersley said. As of July 31, the city had about $135,000 in its street improvement fund.
