The Falkville VFW Post 10774 recently donated more than $5,000 in computers, student workbooks, and air conditioning units to Falkville Elementary and High School.
Funds were raised for the project through bingo under the leadership of VFW Bingo Chairman Don Collum.
"We're very aggressive in our support of local children," VFW Post Commander George R. Krigbaum said. "It's important for the community to know their bingo contributions are going directly back into the community."
According to Krigbaum, Falkville VFW contributes an average of $18,000 annually to support area youth through scholarships, summer programs and events, school needs and Christmas programs.
Falkville VFW worked in conjunction with Southern Computer Parts Distributors of Hanceville to build three new computers for the high school library computer lab. Each computer has a flat-screen monitor and small hard drive to increase workspace for students.
First and second grade students also received $2,500 worth of math workbooks for students to use this school year. A new textbook was adopted by the school board this year, but funds were not available to purchase accompanying workbooks students needed.
In a separate effort, Falkville VFW donated gently used 7 1/2 ton and 4 1/2 ton air conditioning units to be installed in the high school gym.
"We're glad to do what we can," Krigbaum said.
