Changes in Alabama's Open Meetings Act will make it easier for area residents to know what's going on with elected officials.
In compliance with new OMA regulations, the city has set up a notification system for those wanting to be informed of the time and place of all city meetings.
All notices will be given via email. Those wishing to be included on the notification list must complete a form at city hall. The person will then be sent an email notification of all city meetings, including board and committee meetings.
"If we make an error we hope we will err on the side of giving too much information instead of not enough," City Attorney Larry Madison said.
A person's name can be removed from the registry if any of the information on the form is false or if three emails to the provided address are returned as undeliverable.
The state's new Open Meetings laws went into effect Oct. 1. It clears up several ambiguous elements of previous laws, including what constitutes a meeting, what groups are covered by the act and what types of notice are required.
