Funeral for Charles Wesley "Wes" Thompson Jr., 75, of Decatur will be Thursday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church with Dr. Rob Jackson officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Thompson died Monday, Oct. 31, 2005 at Huntsville Hospital. He was born August 6, 1930, in Athens to Charles Wesley Thompson and Louise Phillips Thompson.
He was a retired educator with 34 years as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. He was a teacher, coach and principal at Central High School in Florence, Decatur High School, Athens High School, West Morgan High School, Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, Priceville High School, Brewer High School and Falkville High School. He retired in 1991 after serving two terms at superintendent of Morgan County Schools. He came out of retirement to serve as interim headmaster at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy.
He was a co-captain of the University of Alabama football team in 1956 and was inducted into the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. Mr. Thompson was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine H. Thompson of Decatur; a daughter, Teresa Williamson and husband Jim of Decatur, a son, Charles W. "Chuck" Thompson III and wife Susan of Decatur; a sister, Mary Nell Laughmiller and husband Roy of Decatur; a brother, Doug Thompson and wife Mary Ann of Jackson, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Jim Williamson, Brandon Thompson, John Williamson, and Phillip Williamson, all of Decatur.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Thompson, John Williamson, Phillip Williamson, Jim Williamson, Mike Laughmiller and Jay Laughmiller.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School class.
