Board sets policy for facility use

An amended school board policy that places stricter limits on the use of school facilities by outside individuals and groups has been approved.
The proposed policy was reviewed by board attorney Bill Shinn and approved unanimously at Monday's board meeting.
Under the new policy, no school employee will be compelled to attend a meeting of any student organization if the content of the speech at the meeting is contrary to the religious beliefs of the employee.
Also, any student organization seeking to meet on school property during non-instructional time must submit a written application to the school's principal.
Applications must include the name of the organization, a description of the purpose of the organization, a description of the qualifications for membership, a statement that the students understand and agree to comply with an equal access policy and a proposed schedule of meetings and activities.
In addition, the principal can deny approval to any organization whose purposes, qualifications for membership or proposed activities are unlawful.
Shinn told the board the principal should determine what times outside groups are allowed to use the school and parental consent should be required for those students who wish to attend.
Also, the board accepted a high bid of $3,051 for a 1990 model 72-passenger Bluebird bus but rejected a bid of $600 for a 1990 12-passenger mini-bus.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed said plans are to remove the seats from the mini-bus and use it to transport computer equipment and supplies from school to school. He said this will remove the liability of a school employee using a personal vehicle to transport such items.
The Hartselle High School wrestling team was approved for an out-of-state field trip. It is scheduled to compete in a tournament in Brentwood, Tenn., Jan. 27.
A local science textbook committee consisting of 17 parents and teachers was approved. Members are Kelly McKee, Penny Roy and Beverly Pohl, Barkley Bridge; Stacy Alexander, Barbara Wiley and Kelly Wade, Crestline; Franki Burdette, Dena Mayfield and Rhonda McKissack, Burleson; Scott Holladay, Angela Lemmond, Lynn Welch, and Debbie Smith, Hartselle Junior High; and Robin Smith, Robin Hodges, LePage Williams and Jean Marie Davis, Hartselle High School.
