City council holding public hearing on sign ordinance

An amended sign ordinance that allows for the use of store front banners in the central business district and street banners by nonprofit organizations will be subject to a public hearing for adoption at the next city council meeting Jan. 10.
The amendments also permit the use of a sandwich sign and a flag with a commercial message by any business.
The latest changes were made after council members reviewed the proposed ordinance in a November work session. Some council members expressed concern about the fair and impartial application of sign regulations to all businesses regardless of their location.
The amended ordinance was approved by a vote of 6-2-1 at the Dec. 6 meeting of the Hartselle Planning Commission and sent to the council with a recommendation for approval.
A committee was appointed several months ago to take a look at the sign ordinance and make recommendations for changes that would make it more business friendly.
