Jan. 12, 1956 -The old Vaughn Bridge, which has been condemned as unsafe for general traffic for years and years, was patched up again last week and opened to "light" traffic, according to Morgan County Commissioner Clyde Maples.
Jan. 13, 1956 – -Liquor sales were higher last year in Alabama than at any time since 1949. Morgan County has no legal sales, but plenty of moonshine stills. Revenuers and other law officers destroyed 39 of them in 1955.
Jan. 14, 1956 – -Ernest Ray's appointment as permanent mail carrier on Hartselle Route 1 became effective today, according to John Cooper, postmaster. Harvey Pickens steps into Ray's old place of city carrier.
Jan. 14, 1956 -Applications for employment at the new Hartselle garment plant are being taken starting today, according to Hubert Mitchell, who heads up the Chamber of Commerce's industrial committee.
Jan. 14, 1956 -MCHS edged Athens 61-60 in senior high basketball action tonight. Jackie Atkins with 14 points and Bowes Channell with 10 were high scorers for the Tigers.
Jan. 15, 1956 -Alabama's hunting season for ducks and geese will end this afternoon, according to State Conservation Director Bill Drinkard. Sportsmen say this has been one of the best waterfowl shooting seasons in recent years.
Jan. 15, 1956 -Four would-be thieves attempted to steal copper wire from the city electric department last night. Fortunately, police officers came upon the culprits during the course of their regular patrols. As a result, three men and one woman are behind steel jail bars today.
Jan. 16, 1956 -Local collegian Bobby Carl Francis was on the dean's list of Auburn's School of Engineering as a result of his high grades during the recently completed fall quarter.
Jan. 17, 1956 -Mr. and Mrs. Robert Self have three brand-new daughters. The darling triplets weighed 16 1/2 pounds total and were delivered by Dr. Fred Sherrill, Jr., assisted by Dr. Tom Guyton. Mom, Dad, and the babies are all doing fine.
Jan. 18, 1956 -The new southern singing sensation, Elvis Presley, unfortunately is not scheduled to be back in Alabama for quite some time. Several from this area got to see him in Montgomery last month. Presley will be on TV out of New York in February.
