City eyes mandatory sewer for some

Hartselle's City Council is considering an ordinance that would require mandatory sewer hookups for most new developments.
The policy requires a subdivision to connect to the system if the property line closest to the sewer line is within a specific distance. The distance is determined by the number of lots in the development multiplied by 50 feet.
For example, a subdivision with 20 lots would be required to connect to the sewer system if the property line is within 1,000 feet of the connection.
The council will hold a public hearing on the plan at its Feb. 28 meeting. The meeting will start at 7 p.m.
If approved, the ordinance will only impact new developments and wouldn't affect existing homes. It does not address a push by some to require homeowners with failing septic systems to connect to the sewer lines if they live within a specific range.
