Falkville Elementary School has recognized more than 90 students in grades K-6 as winners in its annual science fair and poster contest. A panel of judges from the community judged science projects and poster entries Feb. 7. All science projects were viewed by the student body from 9 to 11 a.m. and poster winners were announced and recognized at a PTO meeting at 7 p.m.
Ribbons were presented for best of show, first, second and third place and honorable mention. Best of show and first and second place science fair winners in fifth and sixth grades are eligible for entry in the regional science fair at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in March. First and second place poster winners are invited to enter the Morgan County Fair Poster Contest in September.
"Save the Planet" was the theme for the kindergarten through third poster competition and fourth through sixth graders were permitted to choose their own project and enter it in either one of four categories: Behavioral and Social Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science and Physical Science.
"I felt like the projects as a whole were better than they were last year. This indicated that students are learning the scientific process and how to present it in a neat and orderly way," said Anna Henderson, a fourth grade science teacher who coordinated the event. "We had a high level of participation and the presentation was very professional looking. We also had the support of a wonderful group of parents and grandparents, as well as faculty members and administrative personnel."
Students began planning and working on their projects in early December last year.
