A graveside service for Fred Smelley, 86, of Decatur was Tuesday, April 11, at 11:30 a.m. at Burningtree Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Slack officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Smelley died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at his residence. He was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Covington County to Howard Caleb Smelley and Eunice Hughes Smelley. He was a member of the River Falls Baptist Church in Covington, a World War II Navy veteran and a member of the Boilermaker’s Local Union No. 112 for more than 50 years. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick Smith and a granddaughter, Shannon Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Smelley, a daughter, Pat Smith and husband Gordon; and a granddaughter, Stacia Barcal and husband Kelly, all of Decatur; and three great-granddaughters, Morgan Cantrell and Amber and Hannah Barcal.
