Hartselle School Board opted for a change in leadership at Monday night's regular meeting by appointing Dr. Andy Dukes as chairman for 2006-07. He is the third person to serve in the position in the past three years.
Before he called for nominations, Greg Cain, the outgoing chairman, stated, "I've enjoyed serving as chairman during the past year. "It was challenging and fun."
Later, he said, "I'm relieved. With everything I have going on…between managing a softball team and running for probate judge, I just didn't have the time that needs to be devoted to the position."
Dukes is a family medical practitioner and a partner of Hartselle Family Medicine. He is completing the third year of a five-year term on the board.
The board also approved the transfer and promotion of Robin Varwig from assistant principal to principal at Crestline Elementary School, effective June 1, and accepted requests for retirement from six teachers, effective at the end of the current school year. Those retiring are Susan Penn, fourth grade teacher at Crestline, Richard Bennett, computer teacher at Hartselle Junior High, Pat McCreless and John Sivley, both social studies teachers at Hartselle Junior High, Penny Dollar, English teacher at Hartselle High and Robin Hodges, science teacher at Hartselle High.
The board acted on other matters as follows:
