Here's to all the members of the class of 2006

My niece Michelle is one of this year's many high school graduates. Michelle has her path pretty well planned out. She's earned a dance scholarship and hopes to study nursing. I told her I was impressed with her forethought, especially since the biggest thing on my mind when I graduated high school was what bathing suit I was going to wear on the beach that summer.
No matter how well prepared a student may be, it's a big jump from the confines of high school to college life. Suddenly, there isn't a teacher there to tell you to do your homework and often there's no attendance policy that requires you to show up to class at all. You may have been a big deal at your high school, only to find yourself one of the minnows in a sea of freshman.
It's with these thoughts in mind that I offer a few words of advice to our graduating seniors. I hope you all – even you, Michelle – will take them to heart:
I hope all graduates have a safe and happy summer. And I hope they have more on their minds than I did all those years ago. Bathing suits are important, but then again, so is life.
