Smith presented award at Relay For Life Hartselle
The Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society recently awarded 216 young cancer survivors a $1,000 college scholarship each for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Thirty-seven of those recipients are from Alabama, including Andrew Smith of Hartselle and Cory Kelly of Lacey's Spring.
Scholarships were awarded based on financial need, leadership, academic achievement and community service.
To be eligible, candidates must be under 25, have had a cancer diagnosis before age 21 and be a Mid-South resident.
Students must also have a grade point average of at least 2.5 and been accepted to an accredited school. Scholarships funds are raised in part through Relay For Life events.
