Trying to figure out how to keep your shoes dry?

Young inventors have some ideas

Students attending the recent Camp Invention at Danville-Neel Elementary School really stretched their imaginations when it came to coming up with ways to cope with everyday problems.
For example, Copper Wright invented a force field to prevent shoes from getting wet, Jacob Price created a foolproof safe to keep toys and games out of the reach of younger siblings and Boone Shipley came up with a device to prevent knees from getting bumps and bruises.
Inventing something of their own was just a part of the weeklong summer education program. Campers also launched an expedition to the deep seas, located a buried treasure on a faraway island and built their own interactive carnival attractions.
"It has been a challenging but worthwhile learning experience for the campers," Jennifer Whitley, camp director, said. "The 'Encounter' program we used this year gave students plenty of opportunities to be creative and to work on problem solving skills. At the same time, they enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun."
The camp was attended by 30 children in grades one through five. They came from Decatur, New Hope, Priceville and Danville.
The National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio, sponsored the camp. Providing scholarships for students who needed financial assistance were Waddey &Patterson of Huntsville, Wal-Mart (Decatur) and Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Cooperative.
Assisting Whitley as camp staffers were McKenzie Henderson and Holly Powell, both teachers, and Amanda Kelsoe and Randi McCleskey, both counselors.
