DHS volleyball wins national award
The American Volleyball Coaches Association recently announced that Danville High School was the winner of the Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2005-06 season.
The award honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or at least a 4.10 grade-point average on a 5.0 scale.
Each member of the 2005 Lady Hawks, who finished second in Class 3A, will receive a plaque and a certificate commemorating the honor.
Rock Solid to hold tryouts
The Rock Solid 16-and-under travel softball team from Hartselle will be having tryouts for the 2007 season Saturday Aug. 17. If you are interested, contact Lynn Dean at 260-5631 or Chris Forth at 773-8511 after 4 p.m. to learn the time and place.
ACS Golf meet set for August
This year's American Cancer Society Golf Championship will be held at Burningtree Country Club starting Friday, Aug. 18. Local winners will get a chance to advance to the Mid-South Division Golf Tournament in Birmingham Oct. 30. The ACS Championship is a four-person scramble event with a shotgun start beginning at 1:30 p.m. A putting contest and a silent auction is planned for Aug. 17 starting at 6 p.m. at Burningtree, as well. Sonshine Soccer sign-ups soon
Sonshine Soccer is an indoor soccer league for boys and girls ages 4-7. Games will be held in the Hartselle First United Methodist Church Ministry Center and the cost to join the league is $30. HHS Boosters golf tourney this Saturday
The Hartselle Booster Club is sponsoring a four-man scramble golf tournament Saturday at Quail Creek Golf Course. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the shotgun start is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. rain or shine. There will be prizes awarded for longest putt, closest to the pin, longest drive and hole-in-one. The registration fee is $200 per team and the tournament is limited to the first 35 teams who register. For more information, call Jerrie Swann at 773-4223 or 773-8839.
