HMC offers new treatment for removal of kidney stones

A non-surgical technique for treating kidney stones known as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is now being offered at Hartselle Medical Center on appointment with Dr. William E. Hughes, a urology specialist located in Decatur. Dr. Hughes is available for consultations at HMC on Wednesdays.
This technology is one of the most revolutionary developments in modern medicine. Since the early 80s, this non-invasive therapy has replaced open surgery for most kidney stones. The procedure uses high-energy shock waves produced outside the body to break stones into small fragments which can be passed spontaneously.
