Sept. 14, 1956 —Mrs. Owen Lyle suffered a broken ankle today when she slipped on the stairs of a Decatur department store.
Sept. 14, 1956 —Eddie Roy and Shirley Walker were crowned “king and queen of cotton” tonight in an event at Roberts Lake sponsored by the Hartselle chapters of FFA and FHA. These groups are made up mostly of those specializing in ag or home ec at MCHS.
Sept. 15, 1956 —Hartselle sisters Virginia and Martha Roberts walked away with top honors in the Morgan County tennis tournament that concluded in Decatur today.
Sept. 15, 1956 —Hal Butler and Katherine Ann Dunaway have resumed their studies at Jax State Teachers College.
Sept. 16, 1956 —Based on an announcement made by the bishop this afternoon, Rev. E. M. Barnes, Jr., will be the first pastor to serve Hartselle First Methodist for a fifth year.
Sept. 17, 1956 —Charles Quinn left today for Fort Jackson, S.C., where he was inducted into the U.S. Army for two years’ service.
Sept. 18, 1956 —Mayor John Burleson was re-elected in a landslide of ballots today. The incumbent chief executive had 735 votes as compared to a combined total of 528 for his two opponents, Troy L. Nunn and Ola Mae Betterton. As far as the legislative branch of city government is concerned, however, voters decided they wanted an all-new city council.
Sept. 19, 1956 —Morgan County Representative Albert Brewer has persuaded the Legislature to provide $1.5 annually to minister to those afflicted with TB. This will be a big help to patients at the Flint sanitarium.
Sept. 19, 1956 —Former lieutenant-governor candidate Shorty Price’s car is having to be sold because Mr. Price failed to pay the property taxes on it. Local Crimson Tide football fans are very familiar with Shorty, the unofficial “head cheerleader” at all Bama games.
Sept. 20, 1956 —Horace Broom has accepted the position of chairman of the Hartselle campaign for the annual Morgan County United Fund drive. Mr. Broom is a very popular and civic-spirited businessman, cashier of the Citizens’ Bank. He is also a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club.
Sept. 20, 1956 —Fred Speake, popular local realtor, underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
