A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 36 and Antioch Road claimed the life of a Somerville girl early Friday morning as she was on her way to school.
The victim was identified as Brittany Ann Maxwell, 17, a senior at Brewer High School.
She died of blunt force injuries when the car she was driving and a car driven by Gloria Kimbrough, 62, also of Somerville, collided at 7:40 a.m. Maxwell was entering Highway 36 to turn right when her car was struck by the other vehicle, which was traveling west on 36. Kimbrough was not injured.
Morgan County Coroner Russ Beard said the victim was wearing a seat belt but said it offered her little protection since her car was struck on the driver’s side.
Maxwell was a popular student and the third member of the senior class to die from an accident or illness this school year, according to Principal Francis Couey.
Couey said counselors and representatives of hospice were made available to counsel with students about her death..
Maxwell was a color guard for the BHS band during her freshman, sophomore and junior years, a member of the jazz band, and was active in the Youth for Christ. She was concentrating her studies in culinary arts. She was also a co-founder of “The Way,” a student-led prayer group that was established in 2005.
