Oct. 5, 1956 — William B. Huie was the guest speaker at today’s Book Lover’s Club meeting.
The famous author told those in attendance about several fascinating aspects related to the writing of his numerous novels, news dispatches, and TV appearances. Mr. Huie recently returned here to make his home.
Oct. 5, 1956 — Sim L. Howell, long-time chairman of the Morgan County Board of Revenue, plans to quit this position and has written a resignation letter to Governor Folsom. It is expected that Guy Roberts, a prominent young Hartselle businessman who was elected to replace Howell in the spring primaries, will be appointed to take the top spot fairly soon.
Oct. 6, 1956 — R. B. Orr on Hartselle 2 has installed a new Chore Boy pipeline milking system. Hands never touch the milk. It goes directly from the cow to the milk cans.
Oct. 7, 1956 — Many Morgan County singers were in Cullman today for the quarterly singing convention, currently chaired by Lewis B. Miller. It was a great blessing to all.
Oct. 7, 1956 — The annual Sparkman, Vest, and Roberts family reunion was held today at Oak Ridge.
Oct. 8, 1956 — The last four Morgan County schools still out—Eva, Ryan, Union Hill, and Gum Pond—reopened this morning after being closed for students to pick cotton. These schools are on the mountain and cotton there does not open as early as it does in the valley.
Oct. 9, 1956 — L. R. “Bobo” Bowling, 24, well known during high school as a superb basketball player for Union Hill, lost his life today in the crash of an Air Force jet in Texas.
Oct. 9, 1956 — The newly installed Hartselle city council tonight reappointed all employees and selected Curtis Chaney to be the police chief. W. L. Kyker resigned recently to take a job in Huntsville.
Oct. 10, 1956 — In calls back home local UA students are reporting that demands to replace the embattled head football coach, J. B. (Ears) Whitworth, are increasing on campus. Unflattering effigies of the coach were recently hung on the quad and by a frat house.
Johnny Lujack, formerly a Fighting Iris QB, is strongly preferred by many Crimson Tide fans to succeed “Ears.”
Oct. 11, 1956 — Skipper Drinkard is attracting a lot of attention at MCHS these days with his new wine-colored sweater.
