Funeral for William Lavern Nelson, 77, of Falkville, will be Thursday (today), Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. at Hills Chapel Church of God with the Revs. Jeff Bennett, Wendell Bennett and Randy Brown officiating.
Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Nelson died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at his residence. He was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Morgan County to Joseph Washington Nelson and Bertha Jane McAnalley Nelson. He was a member of Hills Chapel Church of God. He had worked at Hayes Aircraft, Worthington Climatrol, owned and operated Nelson’s Grocery, Nelson’s Garage and retired from the Morgan County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by a son, Kelly Don Nelson; a daughter, Cherry Lee Nelson; and two brothers, Robert Leon Nelson and William Lavert Nelson.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bertha Presley Nelson of Falkville; two sons, Randy Ray Nelson and Brian L. Nelson, both of Falkville; four daughters, Sheilah Horton and husband Jim of Jacksonville, Fla.; Nada Wood and husband Gary of Decatur, Jennifer Bennett and husband Jeff of Eva and Robbie Garmon and husband Tony of Hartselle; a brother, Ralph Nelson of Falkville; two sisters, Carmen Sanders and Marie McClellan, both of Falkville; eight grandchildren, Rob Wood, Bryan Wood, Tiffany Horton, Travis Horton and Naomi Sopher; six great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ray Sanders, J. L. Sanders, Bill Nelson, Steve Nelson, Kenneth McClellan, Gene Presley and Dale Presley.
