It wasn’t always easy, but Danville repeated as area champions in front of its home fans at the Danville Middle School gym Monday night. The Lady Hawks needed four games to defeat each foe in the single-elimination tournament, knocking off Vinemont 25-11, 23-25, 25-11, 25-7 and defeating Good Hope in the final 29-27, 25-15, 20-25, 25-20.
Lauren Simmons was named the area tournament’s most valuable player, leading the Lady Hawks with 62 kills in the two matches. Alaina Fitzgerald, Bethany Evans and Kassie Cowart were named as all-tournament team members.
Fitzgerald had 35 kills on the night and added six aces. She also led the Lady Hawks with 16 digs, followed by Simmons and Kirby Wallace with 13 each.
Magen Linderman led Danville with seven aces, followed by Simmons with five. Evans led the team with 71 assists and Simmons had a team-high six blocks.
The Lady Hawks were 2-0 during the regular season against Good Hope, and also defeated the Raiders in pool play at last year’s Elite Eight state tournament.
Both Danville and Good Hope advance to the Region D tournament Saturday. The host school of the tournament was still to be determined as of presstime.
