Funeral for Myrtis Newman Powell, 92, of Decatur was Sunday, Oct.15, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. John Clotfelter and Vandon Windsor officiating.
Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.
Mrs. Powell died Thursday, October 12, 2006, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born August 21, 1914, in Morgan County to Harry Butler Newman and Ada Brannon Newman. She was a Methodist and was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Newton B. Powell; a son, Phillip D. Powell; her parents; and four brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Powell was a native of Hartselle who married and moved with her husband to Decatur. Her passions included candle making and floral arranging. She was an avid gardener who served as a flower show judge for 40 years. She owned “The Candle Cupboard” on Danville Road and wrote a book, “Candles in Flower Arrangements.” She was on the Decatur Parks Parks &Recreation Board for many years. Mrs. Powell enjoyed Southern cooking and talking politics around the dinner table. She remained a loyal supporter of the Democratic Party.
She is survived by a son, Joseph B. Powell and wife Lisa of Somerville; four grandchildren, Jody Powell, Lucas Powell and wife Pamela, Alana Powell and Kara Sparkman.
Pallbearers were John Horton, Dr. McCoy Pitts, Kermit Tucker, Stanley Fields, Bill Brazelton, Lance Conway and Victor Landreth.
