After months of practice, six games, and three-and-one-half quarters, Priceville’s playoff hopes came down to one play Friday night.
Priceville went for the win on a two-point conversion that would have given the Bulldogs the lead with just over a minute remaining.
Ardmore’s defense stiffened, though, refusing to allow tailback Trevor Maxwell to reach the goal line and the home-standing Tigers escaped with a 7-6 win and a guaranteed berth in the Class 4A playoffs.
For those three-and-a-half quarters, Priceville surprised the potent Ardmore offense with its own dose of stingy defense. Ardmore running back Derrick Green was met at the line on multiple occasions, forcing the Tigers into several punting situations.
Unfortunately, Ardmore returned the favor most of the night and held Priceville to limited offensive production until the fourth-quarter drive.
Ardmore scored midway through the final period on a 1-yard run by Elijah Barnes. With the extra point good, the Tigers held a 7-0 lead.
But a determined Priceville squad took the ensuing kickoff and put together its best drive of the evening, culminating with a 13-yard touchdown strike from Will Stevens to Maxwell.
The Priceville coaching staff immediately signaled the offense to try for two, but the handoff to Maxwell was met at the line and the conversion fell short.
The Bulldogs attempted an onside kick on the kickoff, but Ardmore recovered the ball and ran out the clock to seal the win.
Priceville (4-4) entertains East Lawrence Friday night. Ardmore (6-2) hosts DAR.
