Hartselle sweeps Athens on the road; Tigers split against Bulldogs

Hartselle boys 43, Athens boys 38
The Tigers improved their record to .500 with a road win over the Golden Eagles Thursday night. Victor Stansberry led the team with 14 points and three assists and Alex Brown added 11 for Hartselle (1-1). Brown added five rebounds and three steals. Jackson Holmes led the team with seven rebounds.
Defensively, Hartselle held Athens to 11 percent shooting from the three-point line and 35 percent overall.
Last year, Hartselle did not pick up its first win of the season until its seventh game — a 39-32 win over Brewer on Dec. 9.
Hartselle girls 69, Athens girls 61
The Lady Tigers improved to 2-0 with the win Thursday on the road, paced by double-double performances from two seniors. Mary Virginia Reeves finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Lauren Drake had 18 points and 10 boards.
Anna Reeves finished with 14 points and Jessi Smith had 10. Jessica Andrews added nine assists.
Keona Shoulders led Athens with 16 points.
Priceville boys 63, Hartselle boys 44
Priceville improved to 2-0 on the young season with a home win over Hartselle Nov. 14 in the first game of the season for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs closed out the first half with a 12-2 run over the last 3:16 to take a 35-22 halftime lead.
Priceville senior guard Josh Bedwell had 25 points and 12 rebounds. K.C. Green added 15 points for the Bulldogs and JaColby Reid had 11 points.
Brown had 14 points in his first varsity start for Hartselle.
Hartselle girls 76, Priceville girls 48
The Lady Tigers got a season of big expectations off to a solid start. Hartselle, returning most of its starters from a team that advanced to the Northwest Regionals and was ranked as high as No. 2 last year, had little trouble with the Lady Bulldogs (1-1) on the road Nov. 14.
Reeves led Hartselle with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Drake added 13 points and nine rebounds and Heather Speegle finished with 13 points and nine boards. Jessica Andrews contributed nine points, seven assists and six steals.
Priceville’s Keila Hamlin led all scorers with 23 points. She also dished out five assists. Adrianna Delatorre added seven rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.
