More homes needed for park cats

With a Dec. 1 deadline staring rescuers in the face, some of Sparkman Park’s stray cats have been picked up while others are still in need of a new home.
Kelsoe said anyone wishing to adopt one or more of the cats should contact her at 345-3521. She asked callers to leave her a message in the event she’s not at home when they call.
Kelsoe and four of five other individuals who faithfully fed and cared for the park cats for more than 25 years banded together last month to prevent them from being captured and euthanized. Their action came after the Morgan County Health Department notified city officials by letter that the cats should be removed for sanitary and health reasons. Subsequently, a sign was posted to indicate the cats were going to be removed and it warned people not to feed them.
The caretakers volunteered to remove the cats and find homes for them and Mayor Dwight Tankersley accepted their offer. He agreed not to take any action against the cats as long as the caretakers were making a good faith effort to remove them.
