Nov. 23, 1956 —Minor Refrigeration is having the grand opening at its beautiful, new modern location, formerly Horton’s Grocery, today and tomorrow.
Nov. 24, 1956 —Sgt. Charles Quinn of Ft. Jackson, S.C., is spending the Thanksgiving weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Y. Quinn.
Nov. 25, 1956 —Cecil E. Johnson walked across the street from his home to that of his brother, Euclid Johnson, this afternoon. As the two men were talking in the yard they noticed that one of the pecan trees was quite full of nuts. So they decided the limbs should be shaken, Mr. Cecil volunteering to climb the tree and do the shaking. All went well as the first limb was shaken but as he reached to get hold of the second limb Cecil’s foot slipped and he fell, landing on his shoulder and severely crushing the bone. This morning Mr. Johnson underwent surgery at Hartselle Hospital to have the bone put in place and wired.
Nov. 26, 1956 —Hartselle smokers were pondering a statement in the news today from the American Cancer Society indicating that cigarette smoking may cause lung cancer.
Nov. 27, 1956 —The MCHS junior basketball Tigers opened their season here with a bang this afternoon as they beat a highly rated Flint team by a close 31-27 score. Jimmy Speegle and Larry Roberts captain the young Bengals this season.
Nov. 28, 1956 —John Sparkman, Hartselle native and Alabama’s junior U.S. senator, today strongly criticized Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson’s tentative decision to assign long range missile development to the Air Force while shorter missiles remain the Army’s concern. This drastic change, if implemented, would greatly impair the work at Redstone Arsenal, causing many professional workers (a lot from Hartselle) to lose their well-paying Huntsville jobs.
Nov. 29, 1956 —The Morgan County “Voice of Democracy” oratorical contest was held in Decatur this morning. The winners were Betty Briscoe (Decatur, first), Douglas Ann Maner (Austinville, second), and Bill Stewart (Hartselle, third).

—Huntsville spoiled the opening game for Hartselle’s senior basketball team tonight, picking up a 46-34 decision. Jimmy Higdon was the leading scorer for Hartselle with 13 points. Herman Myers, who is now in his fourth season as the Tigers’ mentor, is expecting much better things from his squad as the season progresses.
Nov. 29, 1956 —A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Martin at Hartselle Hospital today.
