Several area teams participate in holiday weekend tournaments

Tigers finish 3-1 at Hartselle Sporting Goods House Special
Just eight games into the 2006-07 season, the Hartselle Tigers have already doubled their win total from last year. Hartselle improved to 4-3 overall after going 3-1 at the Hartselle Sporting Goods House Special this weekend. Last season, the Tigers won just two games.
The Tigers’ only loss in the tournament was a 75-33 defeat to Hazel Green, a team that features Vanderbilt commit Keegan Bell. Hartselle defeated the rest of its competition, knocking off Decatur Heritage 47-41, Albertville 52-51 and Grissom 54-40.
Against Hazel Green Saturday, Hartselle got 22 points from Jackson Holmes in the loss. The Trojans had 10 players score as they improved to 6-0 for the season.
Tyler Young and Manquez Jones saw their first varsity action of the season in the game against the Trojans. Both Young and Jones were members of the Hartselle football team.
In their game against Decatur Heritage, the Tigers led by 13 points with 2:32 left in the game before poor foul shooting allowed the Eagles to battle back. Hartselle made just four of its last 16 free throws, but was able to hang on to the six-point victory.
Ryne Lindsey led the way for Hartselle in the win over the Eagles, finishing with 13 points. Alex Brown added 12 and Clay Whatley finished with 11. Victor Stansberry led the Tigers with nine rebounds, Holmes had seven and Lindsey finished with five.
De’el Watkins led Decatur Heritage with 12 points.
Against Albertville, Brown hit a game-winning shot with seven seconds left to give the Tigers the hard-fought victory. The Aggies missed two shots following Brown’s game winner.
Stansberry led Hartselle with 16 points while Lindsey added 14 and Brown tacked on 12. Holmes also finished in double figures, with 10 points.
In its opening game of the tournament against Grissom, Hartselle was led by Brown’s 15 points. Holmes had 13 points and Wesley Clemons added seven. Whatley led the Tigers with six rebounds, followed by Brown with four. Lindsey had four steals and Stansberry finished with three assists.
Lady Tigers find the
competition tough in Tennessee
At the Bradley Central Tournament in Cleveland, Tenn., the Lady Tigers faced their toughest competition of the young season. Hartselle dropped two games at the tournament, losing to Memphis Central (Tenn.) 63-56 and falling to Austin-East (Tenn.) 71-54. The Lady Tigers did win their final game, defeating Brainerd (Tenn.) 48-43.
Against Memphis Central, the Lady Tigers were led by Lauren Drake’s double-double performance. She finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Andrews led Hartselle in scoring with 18 points and Jessi Smith and Mary Virginia Reeves each scored 10.
In its loss against Austin-East, Hartselle received double-double nights from both Drake and Reeves.
Drake and Reeves both scored 11 points for Hartselle in its win over Brainerd. Hilary Dukes had eight for the Lady Tigers and Smith added seven. Drake also had 12 rebounds.
Hartselle is currently 4-2 on the season.
Brewer teams join Hartselle at tournaments
The Lady Patriots also competed in the Bradley Central Tournament, while Brewer’s boys competed in the Hartselle Sporting Goods House Special. Brewer’s girls picked up a 73-51 win over Brainerd (Tenn.) and the Patriots finished 1-3 at their tournament, beating Albertville 58-57 but falling to Hazel Green 82-58, Decatur Heritage 43-37 and Grissom in a 49-47 double-overtime loss.
In the win over Brainerd, freshman Emily Dabbs led the Lady Patriots with 18 points. Courtney Scott added 10 points and seven rebounds and Andrea Crawford had eight points and six boards. Brainerd’s Jessica Jones scored 35 points in the losing effort.
Against Hazel Green, Brewer’s Rusty Boyd had 21 points while Rodney Childs added 12.
In their loss to Decatur Heritage, the Patriots were led by Boyd’s double-double performance as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He added two assists and two blocks. Chris Humphries added 10 for Brewer.
Against Grissom, the Patriots and Tigers were tied at 34-all at the end of regulation before Brewer fell in double overtime. Boyd had 17 points to lead the Patriots.
Priceville wins 2 of 3 at Hanceville Tournament
Priceville point guard Josh Bedwell led the Bulldogs in scoring in all three games at the Hanceville tournament, a tournament where Priceville beat Curry 46-36 and Corner 51-43 but lost to Pinson Valley 62-58.
In the loss against Pinson Valley, the Bulldogs’ first loss of the season, Bedwell finished with 37 points.
Against Curry, Bedwell had 24. K.C. Green added 14 for Priceville.
In the Bulldogs’ win over Corner, Bedwell poured in 38 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double performance. Priceville’s Robert Varner also had 10 rebounds in the win.
Priceville is now 5-1 on the season.
Lady Hawks and Lady Bulldogs each win 2 at SportsLink tourney
Danville and Priceville’s girls’ teams both finished with 2-1 records at the Lawrence County Sportslink Tournament. Danville defeated R.A. Hubbard 47-46 and West Morgan 59-37 but fell to Lawrence County 59-26. Priceville also fell to Lawrence County, losing 84-60. The Lady Bulldogs did pick up wins against New Hope (53-49) and R.A. Hubbard (56-51).
Against New Hope, Priceville was led by Keila Hamlin’s 15 points and seven rebounds. Abbie Harris added 10 points and nine assists and Melissa Johnson finished with seven rebounds.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ win over R.A. Hubbard, Hamlin again led the way with 17 points. Marissa Chambers added 15 and Adrianna Delatorre finished with 10 for Priceville.
In the loss to Lawrence County, a pair of underclassmen led Priceville in scoring. Sophomore Callie Cox had 11 points and freshman Allison White added 10.
In the Lady Hawks’ win over West Morgan, Bethany Evans paced the way with 16 points while Lauren Simmons added 11 and Magen Linderman had 10.
Against R.A. Hubbard, Danville was led by Alaina Fitzgerald’s 18 points. Bethany Evans had 11 for the Lady Hawks.
Danville’s record is now 3-2 for the year.
Blue Devils finish 1-2 at Holly Pond Tournament
Falkville dropped two of its three games at the Holly Pond Tournament last weekend, falling to Arab 59-51 and Fairview 67-57. The Blue Devils defeated West Point 70-53.
Against Arab, Falkville held a five-point lead at halftime but couldn’t quite hold on as the Blue Devils fell to 3-2. Heath Alford led Falkville with 16 points and Joseph Lacey added 12.
Falkville trailed Fairview by 13 at halftime and staged a rally but it wasn’t enough. Alford had a dominating performance in the loss, finishing with 26 points and 13 rebounds.
In its win against West Point, Falkville was once again paced by the senior Alford. He had 35 points and 19 rebounds for the Blue Devils. Thomas Holt added 15 for Falkville.
