Nov. 30, 1956 —Basketball season is officially here, and local enthusiasts will see a lot of Bowes Channell and Jimmy Higdon. They are the co-captains of the MCHS Tiger cagers. Incidentally, Channell is sidelined for games this weekend because of blisters on one foot.
Dec. 1, 1956 —Large contingents of local alumni from both schools were in Birmingham this afternoon for the Alabama-Auburn football game. API won by a 34-7 score.
Dec. 1, 1956 —A building permit was awarded today to L. C. Stephenson to construct a new house on the airport road. The estimated cost of the five-room and garage project is estimated to be $8,500.
Dec. 2, 1956 —The county road commissioners are hoping to do paving in the Cedar Cove area if state funding can be secured. The project will begin at the Falkville-Eva road to connect with the existing paved road in the Cedar Cove area. It amounts to paving about five miles of dirt road.
Dec. 3, 1956 —Dynamic Fullback Karl Estes won out in both the individual scoring and rushing columns in the recently concluded MCHS Tiger football season. Estes had 54 points as a result of nine scoring runs. In the rushing column, Karl had 492 yards with his top game performance coming during the Rogersville contest when he ran for 78 yards. The Tigers’ total points amounted to 82 during the ’56 campaign while the rushing figure was 1,410 yards.
Dec. 4, 1956 —Local Crimson Tide fans are hoping for a better basketball season than the football campaign was. Their defending SEC champs open the ‘56-’57 season tonight.
Dec. 5, 1956 —Five cases of cancer were reported in Morgan County this month. Overall, there were 452 victims of this dread disease in the state at-large.
Dec. 5, 1956 —Residents of Cotaco, Talucah, and Valhermosa Springs will soon be able to have telephones. A $53,000 project has been initiated to make it possible for the eastern section of the Hartselle exchange area to communicate much more easily with their families and friends.
Dec. 6, 1956 —The Christmas season officially arrived in Hartselle with the Christmas parade and opening celebrating the arrival of Santa Claus tonight. Simultaneously, the downtown Christmas lights were turned on for the first time. Estelle Smith is chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Christmas committee.
