Hartselle is asking the state to look at its two most traveled thoroughfares to see if traffic speeds along the roads need to be changed.
Mayor Dwight Tankersley said the city has sent a letter to the Alabama Department of Transporation asking for traffic studies along Highway 31 and Highway 36. Tankersley said the state will examine the roads in segments and could adjust the speed limits at segments along the roads.
One of the main areas of concern is the stretch of Highway 31 from Lane Road to Tanner Heights. The speed limit there is currently 50 mph. Tankersley said he would like to see ALDOT lower it between 45-40 mph.
Another concern is the west side of Highway 36. ALDOT has a posted speed limit here of 55 mph. City officials said they would like to see that changed to 45 mph.
The state will set the timeline for the studies to be complete.
