The Salvation Army needs a few more good men and women to serve as Red Kettle Bell Ringers during the holiday season, according to Sherry Selby, project coordinator.
Money collected in the kettles is used to fund various Christmas programs sponsored by the organization as well as to help feed, clothe and shelter needy families throughout the year.
Red Kettle stations are located at Wal-Mart and K-Mart stores in Decatur and Wal-Mart stores in Hartselle, Athens and Moulton. If there are enough volunteers, the stations are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The last day is Saturday, Dec. 23.
The Salvation Army is also collecting toys and gifts for children of needy families though its “Angel Tree” program.
Project Coordinator Kim Little said about 725 names of participating children complete with their age, clothing sizes and wishes were placed on Christmas trees at the Colonial Mall in Decatur and at Wal-Mart stores in Hartselle, Decatur, Athens and Moulton the week before Thanksgiving. Families are encouraged to make a child’s Christmas wishes come true by taking one of the names and buying the gifts requested. The gifts should be returned to the tree not later than Dec. 9, or dropped off at the Salvation Army office at 114 14th Street, SW, in Decatur before Dec. 20.
Monetary donations earmarked for children’s Christmas gifts are also welcomed at the Salvation Army office.”
Several hundred needy families in the three-county area served by the Salvation Army’s Decatur District also will receive food boxes of food on Dec. 20.
