S.A.V.E.S. moves ahead with new building project

Somerville Area Volunteer Emergency Services (S.A.V.E.S,) will soon relocate its No. 1 station from an old, outgrown building adjacent to the town hall to a modern new facility across town on Cutoff Road, according to Geoff Halbrooks, president.
A concrete slab for the 40 by 100 ft. metal building has been poured and the steel framework, metal roofing and siding, insulation and exterior doors should be completed by the end of the year, Halbrooks said. This phase of the project is under contract to Hershberger Builders of Massey. Bids also have been let for building materials needed to complete interior construction.
The building site is located about 150 yards from Highway 67. It was donated by People’s Bank of North Alabama. Site preparation work was donated by District I Commissioner Jeff Clark and former District 2 Commissioner Richard Lyons. Fill dirt was furnished by Steve Fox of Somerville.
S.A.V.E.S. is one of Alabama’s largest all-volunteer fire departments with 64 square miles of territory to cover. It operates eight vehicles with 30 volunteer firefighters and is expected to respond to more than 700 medical emergency, traffic accident and fire calls in 2006. Its ranks include 10 certified emergency medical technicians.
